RE: World Trade Center attack

I'm currently experiencing problems getting through to friends/family in NYC
from London.

Anybody else having the same issues ... ?

Authorities are currently recommending the use of email - although UUNET
apparently has cross-atlantic circuits down.

c.

all PSTN lines are collapsed due to high traffic !
I'm in VA and I'm unable to call DC !

Boston metro phone circuits are pretty well jammed up ... we've been unable
to call out via verizon and Sprint (fast busy) but incoming calls are coming
through.

Cleveland Hopkins has a Boeing 767 in a secure area that is a suspect
hijacked plane and possibly has a bomb on it (rumor - from Mayor White).
Additionally, there is another circling 767 over Toledo, OH, apparently
headed for Chicago.

Police are going from door-to-door "recommending" that people go home, and
Mayor White has issued a partial evacuation order from Cleveland.
Interstates and Highways in and out of the cities are closed.

Also, he says that the plane that was downed near Pittsburgh was shot
down intentionally, and was headed for DC.

Cell phones on the Nextel and Sprint network do not function at this time
over here.

The phone systems will be overloaded at best. I would
expect it to only get worse as the day goes on.

how close is the site of the trade center to 60 Hudson? i've looked at my
map of NYC, and it could be pretty close, or could be a little ways away.

there is a good chance that any fiber running past the site is toast,
and of course, the odds of getting a connection using the local PSTN
in Manhattan are essentially zero right now.

Phone lines are all tied up, but AIM and email are working great for
me.

have isps turned off dialup equipment ? Or limited the number of people
that can dialin?

about half a mile or so north.

in my experience so far, the internet is slow in places, but still
okay.

does anyone remember using irc during the gulf war?

It's 6 to 10 blocks north-ish. It's about 50 yards outside the security/
they-won't-let-you-closer cordon.

Chris.

A large fairly important Internet Building, 25 Broadway, is only about 10
or so blocks from WTC. They are on genny power now, and perhaps were even
evacuated.

Our stuff is still up there, tho.

25 broadway, 60 hudson, and 111 8th ave are the major telecom hotels in the
NYC area. From what I have been able to determine, all are uneffected.

FWIW, I'm getting the voice-telco equivalent of an ICMP
administratively-prohibited when trying to place voice calls from San
Francisco to Moscow on AT&T LD. I'm curious whether this is a generalized
policy or whether I'm just encountering a specific failure with a
mis-matched error message.

TELEHOUSE 25 Broadway is unaffected.

We haven't lost the commercial power and our staffs are on site taking care
of customers. We'll have our techs on site around the clock as usual.

I left the downtown area for unrelated reasons, but I can confirm this. As
far as I know, the hijacked Delta plane is still sitting at Hopinks
International.

There are several smaller airports in the area - Burke Lakefront and Lost
Nation (municipal) and the Cuyahoga County Airport in suburban Richmond
Heights. I'm assuming they're closed but don't know what security measures
are in place.

Burke is downtown. Lost Nation is 20 minutes east of the city.

Police are going from door-to-door "recommending" that people go home, and

Interstates and Highways in and out of the cities are closed.

Governor Taft has declared that all non-essential personnel should go
home, as has Hizzoner.

To bring this on-topic, Tower City, Key Center (Key Bank's HQ), and the
former corporate HQ of BP Amoco were evacuated early. Tower City houses a
telco hotel, and the adjacent Skylight Office Tower houses the Cleveland
offices and several studios of broadcasting company Clear Channel
Communications.

Radio is alive and well here. In fact, I'm listening to live news over
Clear Channel's 50-kilowatt AM station, which is being simulcast on all of
their Cleveland- and Akron-area radio stations. Not all of their stations
are at Tower City -- one of them may still be down on Lakeside Avenue, and
one of them is out in the valley -- so I imagine staying on the air wasn't
a big deal for them.

Cell phones on the Nextel and Sprint network do not function at this time

I'm in Painesville now, as Jake is. NorthCoast PCS, a local carrier, is up
and running. I don't have an Alltel, Cingular or AT&T phone, and I don't
have access to my Verizon Wireless phone. (That covers all of the cell
companies that cover Cleveland.) Ameritech's network seems to be up. I'm
dialed into NACS.NET, one of the large locals here, with no problem. I
imagine the other Cleveland ISPs are probably ok too. Haven't turned on
the TV yet.

IMHO we're lucky.

CLEVELAND (AP) - A Delta flight from Boston was forced to land Tuesday at
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport because of fears it had been
hijacked, city officials said. Although authorities had been worried that
there might be a bomb on board, no explosives were found.

The Federal Aviation Administration had been informed at 9:45 a.m. of a
possible hijacking of a plane headed for Cleveland, said FBI spokesman Mark
Bullock.

Flight 1989 to Los Angeles was not hijacked but was grounded by Delta
because it was in the same flight pattern as a plane that was hijacked and
struck the World Trade Center in New York, Bullock said.

The Delta plane landed in Cleveland about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday with 78
passengers aboard, airport officials said.

FBI spokesman Bob Hawk said that since the Delta plane left Boston about the
same time as one of the hijacked planes, passengers were being interviewed
to see if they saw anything unusual Tuesday morning.

After the plane landed, the passengers were evacuated and the plane was
searched for about three hours, airport officials said.

The airport was closed and bomb-sniffing dogs were brought to baggage pickup
areas.

"There was no bomb, and no hijacking," White said Tuesday afternoon. "The
measures that were taken were taken as precautionary measures."

Cool. I've never been happier to be wrong....

Like I said - we were lucky.
