RE: To CAIS Engineers - WAKE UP AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR CUSTOMERS

Look in the O'Reilly "DNS and BIND" book, 3rd ed., page 217. Also, RFC2317.

However, I have not yet found a single upstream that even knows how to do
it, let alone offers this as a service. They are also not happy that I won't
sign control of my domains over to them and that I run my own zone servers.
Gee, why don't I hand over my bank accounts while I'm at it?

BTW, if you know an ISP that does, I want their contact number. I'm not
trying to win any arguments here. If I lose then I win, because I will have
found a decent vendor. Also, with my monthly recurring cash on the line,
don't you think I've been looking? Also, SpeakEasy seems to not have heard
about SWiP.

As I recall, ARIN doesn't let you change DNS authority information in blocks
larger than /24. They send the SWiP template back to you. The only way to
really give reverse authority for those is to use cname records in the
authoritve server's zone and point them to another in-addr zone for the /26
or /27 or whatever, then pull that smaller zone from the end-user's name
server.

My company knows how to do it, it's just that DSL customers don't give us
enough money to spend the time doing it. Typing out 32 cname records,
setting up a new zone, and then dealing with the end user when they can't
figure out how to set up a master record that allows us to pull the zones is
just way too time consuming for the limited profit margin of a DSL line.

It looks to _me_ (as it does to about 95% of the people on this mailing
list, I'm sure) like you're trying to use something totally inadequate for
your purposes.
If you're using the standard "small business trying to get a connection for
web browsing and email" package that's aimed at your average
non-computer-related small business (eg: a small law or accounting firm),
then you shouldn't be surprised that they want to be the technical contact
and authoritative DNS for your domains, because that's part of their
offering. And, I might add, it's a very good thing they offer that, because
your average small business probably doesn't have a clue what DNS is.

Now, I realize your name isn't Alex Black (unless you have multiple
personalities), but it sure looks to me like SpeakEasy knows how to SWIP
(and the SPEK-RMEYER-0 name suggests they were trying to SWIP it to you).

Vivien

Roeland,

We not only know how to do it but actually have it implemented and provide
this service to clients. It's NOT that difficult (although setting up IRRd
was considerably more simple).

So, if you're serious about services, you know how to contact me. If not,
please stop whining on NANOG.
