IXC Fibre cut IL,OH

IXC communications currently has more than a hundred ds3s
cut. The outage started at 0830 CDT on 9/19/98.
All ds3s that I have isolated traverse their fibre route
between cleveland and downtown chicago. The outage seems to affect
the chicago area primarily.

IXC was unable to provide ETR.

On a side-note, if you are in the ameritech service area,
ixc's 800 number translation is not working. You get to
hear a non-standard 'all circuits are busy'. If you need
to reach them, call their austin number 5124273700

Cut is isolated...

It is in CHI area..

Right outside a carrier known only as "Norlight"..
The join appears to be known as the "MidWest Relay"..
Several pipes vendors appear to be affected, one of which
is CNI, aka "Consolidated McClout" (sp ?)

ETR: Initial circuits 1 hour, 30 min....
     Remainder ASAP.

On site technicians swear that the "Big Hoe" was seen in the area..
Strange tracks have been found, and one technicians appears
to have an *actual* recording of the eerie sounds
it makes in the middle of the night....

  :)

Good luck... and enjoy the day everyone.

Possibly the same cut also took out some of Consolidated/McLeod's circuits,
including our OC-3 to the AADS NAP. The McLeod guy I talked to said the cut
was in or near Kankakee, Illinois. We lost our NAP connection at 8:40am CDT
Saturday and it was restored at about 6:15pm CDT.

I'm wondering if night construction will contribute to more
backhoes hitting fiber or not. A number of construction companies
and such have started doing their work at night. Just something to
ponder late at night.

Certainly more late night cuts (like 10pm -> 4am) than the opposite
(10am to 4pm).

I guess the train pulled out...

Heh. And I found out today that Qual.Net (to whom I'm indirectly connected)
was affected too...

When I was riding Amtrak along the Northeast Corridor today, I saw
a backhoe right near the track somewhere in upstate NY. So, be
forewarned of an impending disaster...

Heavy construction has been going on at night as long as there has been
flood lights - most state agency require it to be at night especially on
congested roadways.
