db9f to usb-c serial

i know this is geeky, and not telling anyone else how thry should run
their network. but i gotta try.

so i have this nice (i.e. small and simple) ftdi usb-c to rj45m blue
router craft/console cable. i also have a db9f to rj45m cable, also
robin's egg blue. i i also have an old and clunky keyspan to usb-a;
old, clunky, usb-a.

i want the equivalent usb-c ftdi (mac compat) to db9f *server* serial
console cable. 1-2m. integrated, slick, and sexy. magenta preferred,
of course

know any nice ones?

randy

Probably not much bulkier to just add a DB9-RJ45 adapter shell like this:

https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=1153

Then, you can just use your existing USB-C to RJ45 cable and have both options.

thanks,

Why not just plug that usb-c to RJ-45 cable into one of the old RJ-45
to DB-9 dongles? If you really want it to be permanent, use superglue
and some heat-shrink tubing to make it nice and neat.

Can’t find any magenta shrink tube, but this is close:

Try B0CL4T6NN9 at Amazon, even has a 10ft option.

Buy it pre-made. The pinout isn't perfectly 1:1 - a single ground on
the DB9 side goes to two grounds on the RJ45 side. This makes it a
nuisance to make your own dongles.

The price is rude but Cisco hasn't made them for many years, so you
get what you get.

You can also connect one of the newer db9 to rj45 blue cables to a
usb-c to rj45 cable using a reverse inline coupler:

You could get a Netra T1 with RJ45 serial ports, using Sun/Cisco pinout,
25 years ago. And we're still struggling with DB9 connectors. Why?

looks as closeas i'm gonna get. a bit clunky and thick wires. but i
guess i am not in japan where smaller is more appreciated. thanks.

Sun and Cisco 8-pin modular serial pinouts are very different.

(Pedantic nit to pick - not all 8-pin modular jacks are RJ-45.)

The D connectors in question are also correctly called DE-9, unless it is the larger DB shell which would usually be a 25-pin connector with only 9 pins populated.

Ant

Sure, sure, and it's also TIA-232 not RS-232. It hasn't been a
"recommended standard" since at least 1986.

Try googling for de-9 instead of db-9. The world understands the 9-pin
d-sub to be db9.

No, no, no. We can have fun for a long time with this

You can find the Netra T1 105 serial pinout on page 56 in the User and
Administration Guide (thanks Oracle for keeping that available!):

Here's the table for convenience:

TABLE 6-3 Pin Cross-overs for a DB9 (9-pin) Adapter

Serial Port (RJ45 Connector) Pin 9-pin Connector
Pin 1 (RTS) Pin 8 (CTS)
Pin 2 (DTR) Pin 6 (DSR)
Pin 3 (TXD) Pin 2 (RXD)
Pin 4 (Signal Ground) Pin 5 (Signal Ground)
Pin 5 (Signal Ground) Pin 5 (Signal Ground)
Pin 6 (RXD) Pin 3 (TXD)
Pin 7 (DSR) Pin 4 (DTR)
Pin 8 (CTS) Pin 7 (RTS)

The Cisco pinout is of course all over the place. One example:

On page B-4 we have:

Cable B-3 Console Port Pinouts

Pin Signal Name HP Pins Direction Description
1 RTS UART_RTS1 Output Request to send
2 DTR NC
3 TXD UART_SOUT1 Output Transmit data
4 RI GND Ring indicator
5 GND GND
6 RXD UART_SIN1 Input Receive data
7 DSR/DCD NC Input Data set ready/Data Carrier detect
8 CTS UART_CTS1 Input Clear to send

How about this one?

Never used one, so no idea if they work - but at least its cheap

USB Type C to RS-232 Serial DB09 Female Adapter Cable 100cm Round Black Cable - Renhotec

oooooooo!

I use one of these:

https://redpark.com/usb-c-serial-cable/

Now do that but with an RJ45 at the end (e.g., Cisco, Arista chassis, etc)

I have one that looks like this one, don't know if it's the exact same. Have had it for several years.

https://www.amazon.com/Console-Compatible-Windows-Switch-Router/dp/B08BCQ8LLR/

Here’s the one with an RJ45 end. Works well on Apple’s iPadOS ans iOS devices with various terminal apps:

have that. and the one that goes from rj45m to db9f. it was the usb to
db9f for which i hungered. ordered the pink one from china; how could i
resist?
