ABC News mentions Echelon

I just heard this from a commentator on ABC News:

[US Intelligence] has the ability to "Sweep up all communication going
around the world in a very broad way."

They must be referring to echelon. What's interesting
is that ABC news is saying that they have echolon
like capabilities in the Continental US.

This is much rumoured but always denied and probably
technically illegal.

There are currently "millions and millions of phone calls in this vacuum
cleaner."

"They will be sorting through all of the communications going through phone

numbers that they have an interest in."

The reporter also mentioned that the officials have to be careful not to
intercept calls of US Citizens.

There seems to be a break somewhere along the path to mediaone (ATT
Broadband) cable modems in the Boston area - this all happened around
midnight - suggesting either a site where backup power ran out or a
preempted circuit

the traceroute I just ran shows:

7 204.255.169.94 (204.255.169.94) 18 ms 17 ms 20 ms

... and things just stop
note that 12.125.33.22 is registered to att.net

does anybody recognize those addresses and suggest what might be out? (and
if so, any idea about restoral activities going on)

Thanks much,

Miles Fidelman

Hogwash. The US laws prevent only the US Agency from spying on it's
citizens. There is nothing that prevents the other Echelon partners (I
beleive they are Austrailia, Britian, and New Zealand) from doing the
spying and sharing the results.

Don't forget Canadia. Er, Canada.

I've got access via ATT Broadband (on the 24.128.0.0/16) and it was working
fine last night (at least up until 1am EST when I went to bed...)
and appears to be up right now...
