Server Room Environment

I have a couple of quick questions about environmental settings for server
rooms.

What is the ideal temperature and humidity for a server room?
What is too cold for a server room?
What should the humidity range be?

Thanks
Erik

I'm not sure what the *Ideal* temperature should be but we keep our cabinets at 21 degrees centigrade inside. And the outside room temperature at between 6-16 degrees centigrade. The reason for the outside room temperature being so cold is because the cabinets have extractor fans which extract the hot air from the top of the cabinet and exhaust it into the room. It's then re-cooled and recirculated back into the underneath of the cabinet, as much as it needs to stay between 19-23 degrees.

The thermometers are kept in the center of each cabinet away from the fans at the back of the machines. (which also have thermometers in them and suck cold air from the front and extract hot air through the back.)

Erik,

What equipment are you going to have in your server room? If you are going to have printers or tape drives they have different requirements than all
electronic equipment. How is the equipment placed and where are the air intakes and air exhaust from the equipment. Where are your HVAC and are
they adding to the room load?

How much heat is the equipment generating?

You want to cool the equipment but you do not want condensation on the equipment. You do not want totally dry air as the static will damage the
equipment also. You will need to check with the equipment manufacturer to get “the answer” to this question.

Will you have cubicles in the room for people or will it only be equipment.

Only you can answer this question for your equipment and what ever else is in the room. Is it a small room or a larger room?

So far, I've found most enviroments to be between 65-70F typically at
40% humidity. The tempature tends to be closer to 70 in datacenters
where people have to work on systems/equipment a lot. In regards to the
humidity, anything above 40% will permit nasty things like black mold to
start growing.
