Power outage in North East

Has anyone heard of a big Power outage in the North east?
I just got a call from one of my tech's in the GBLX bldg in Newark, NJ
at 1085 raymond and they are telling him that they lost power!
But I also got a call from AT&T in NY that they also lost Power!

Fox News on generator power, JFK, La Guardia, City Hall, etc. etc. all
offline. Rumor is a ConEdison plant is on fire (CNN?)

(IRC makes for a great first response news service, but the stories are wrong
as often as not, and always vague. I guess some form of early warning is
better than nothing ...)

It looks like a rather large power outage -- we're in South Western Ontario,
Canada, and power is out in Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph, Hespler, and (I'm
pretty sure) London as well. Can't say about Toronto.

We are in Toronto, out all over the city.

Power is flakier then all heck here in Albany, NY. Outages / major brown
outs. We are running on Generator here since it is way cleaner power at the
moment.

I just got off the phone with an old boss of mine. It would appear
that there is a large fire at a ConEd plant that has now caused a
cascading power outage in the Northeast. Some more plants may have
tripped offline because of the load they absorbed from the loss of the
other plant.

If I get more information, I'll post.

CNN reports that Toronto is out, also.

At the moment the power outage encompasses:

New York City
Boston
Philadelphia
Detroit
Toronto
Ottowa

and various and sundry smaller cities.

Check your local news outlet for more details.

You're looking at a major grid failure all across the NE tier. No telling
how long to manually reset all the blown breakers.

Massive outages all over Philadelphia, PA, including 401 North Broad

Alex

latest word (on cnn.com) is that the niagara-mohawk grid (upstate NY and
parts of canada) overloaded and went down.

i lost power here twice over a period of about 15 minutes (here being on
NYSEG, east of Albany NY, which is joined to Ni-Mo at the hip.) it's back
up, but i suspect it'll be shaky for a while.

all the burning transformers, etc., are all probably side effects of the
major power outage.

Actually, Mayor Blumberg just told CNN that the smoke being seen at the
ConEd plant is normal for this situation. It is also being reported that
this whole thing started in Ottawa, or an overload of the Niagra-Mowhak
power grid.

Sounds huge and probably bigger than just a single plant. Watching the
MSNBC/CNN feeds in the NOC shows everyone filing out of NYC on foot b/c
of lack of subway and traffic-light-induced gridlock.

The primary affect we've seen so far is the drop off in customer traffic
based on CPE being offline. No real hit to infrastructure yet.

The state power official on CNN has just been saying that ConEd shut itself down automatically after something that happened on the Niagara Mohawk power grid that caused the spikes down across the areas affected.

They are saying that the black smoke was normal and it isn't on fire.

It is certainly on most of the news channels here in the UK at the moment..

Hope the restoration goes speedily for anyone and everyone here who is directly affected or has friends and family that are..

Philly has not been affected by this (yet), nor have I heard anything
about Boston.

From MSNBC:

Other affected cities included Buffalo, Albany and Syracuse, N.Y.;
Hartford, Conn.; Lansing and many other smaller cities in Michigan; Akron
and Toledo, Ohio; and Ottawa and Montreal in Ontario.

Washington and the federal government were not affected Neither were much
of New England including all of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New
Hampshire, southern Vermont and eastern Connecticut and other areas of
Canada, including Quebec City.

CNN has mentioned several times the theory that the Blaster worm
potentially had something to do with this.

No joke.

Anyone been able to verify the reports of the ConEd fire? The helicopter coverage I saw on MSNBC in the NOC did not seem to show signs of any fire.

and i heard it was a right-wing anti-abortion religious fanatic terrorist
action in syracuse.

perhaps we should wait for the dust to settle a bit?
