Anyone know what happened to ORBS? I can't get their web page - all I get
is "Due to circumstances beyond our control, the ORBS website is no longer
available. "
I have my mail servers attempted at being used as relays and it becoming a
spammers haven - some customers of mine are getting 1500+ messages and
it's starting to become an issue. (From other people relaying to me)
Any word? Ideas?
I don't want to start a MAPS vs. ORBS thing here....

Alan Brown posted some very terse comments and shut ORBS down.
no explicit reason was given, but there were apparently a lot
of things going on.
in the absence of ORBS, MAPS RSS is about the only thing going
for open relay tracking right now. there has been some rumor of
other services appearing, but no solid details.

As I sit here I'm finding out more details - Apparently it's been ordered
shut down by the courts? Any truth to this?

If you check news.admin.net-abuse.email or SPAM-L you will find plenty on
this subject -- please don't pollute the NANOG list with it.
Thanks,

there was certainly a report that ORBS got in trouble with the NZ
courts over AB's response to a court order (reportedly, in response
to an order to remove a group of IP blocks form ORBS, he responded
by publicly announcing the list of IP addresses he was removing,
in a manner likely to get those IP addresses manually added to lots
of other lists, not the sort of move which would be endearing to the
legal system in most countries.)

Manawatu Internet Services, the ISP owned and operated by Alan Brown
which hosted ORBS, has gone out of business.
There was a court case between Telecom NZ and Actrix involving ORBS,
which may also have some bearing, but the closure of MIS is the only
factual-looking data I have seen (see below).
