The crsnic servers return hostname matches as well as domain matches, an enduring source of confusion for many years.
You can make the server show all records that match using "=". There's other stuff, whois -h whois.crsnic.net help for more.
By default, the server your whois client is using depends on the client. Some of the code I once wrote for OpenBSD's /usr/bin/whois has survived there and has insinuated itself into other platforms; if your whois is similar then it's using Ultra's whois-servers.net collection (so it's looking up com.whois-servers.net and finding whois.verisign-grs.com. That's a different server from whois.crsnic.net (at least, it has a different address). It's all a bit of a mess.
