ICANN PRESS RELEASE (7-2-99): INTERNET CORPORATION FOR ASSIGNED NAMES AND
NUMBERS (ICANN) STATEMENT ON HACKING OF NETWORK SOLUTIONS' SERVERS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INTERNET CORPORATION FOR ASSIGNED NAMES AND NUMBERS (ICANN) STATEMENT ON
HACKING OF NETWORK SOLUTIONS' SERVERS
Marina Del Rey, CA (July 2, 1999) - For several hours earlier today, access
to the server which hosts the ICANN Web site was disrupted. The information
on ICANN's Web site is administrative in nature and was not damaged.
We have since been made aware of a concerted effort to tamper with some of
the servers currently operated by Network Solutions, Inc. of Herndon,
Virginia. The incident, which is potentially criminal, has been referred to
the appropriate law enforcement officials. An investigation into the source
of the attack, and the manner in which it was carried out, is currently
underway. While there is no evidence that the servers under its control have
been harmed, ICANN is taking the appropriate measures to protect its
equipment located at the Information Sciences Institute of the University of
Southern California.
ICANN condemns this action as an attempt to undermine the stability of the
domain name system and will cooperate fully with any investigation into the
matter
access to icann's web site was not interrupted, one of nsi's was.
don't people have real work to do instead of speculate and post?

Have you checked your cigarette tobacco lately? It seems to be a greenish
color...
The very first sentence in the press release says that access to the ICANN
website server was disrupted.
As part, no doubt, of the current ICANN/NSI war, NSI says that the hack
attack come from the ISP colocated with ICANN...

I personally trust ICANN and NSI as far as I can throw their collective
asses. NSI has shown repeatedly that they don't give a rat's behind one
way or the other about DNS registration system, as long as they continue
to hold power over it. ICANN are far too shady and back-room meeting
oriented to really have anyone's best interest but their own at heart.
So, who's the lesser of the two evils? Both make me shudder.

At least NSI admits that they're a for-profit company. Any
clue what ICANN really is?
Hmm, this is getting non-operational, Reply-To set.

you might check the bylaws and articles, and for 501c status. or you might
post flames. or both.

I choose "both," plus keeping a close eye on what they're up
to. Nonprofit status doesn't mean they've got any clue as to
what they're doing -- and if they do know what they're doing
then that's even scarier, IMHO.
Sorry I didn't say hi at the names council meeting....

we've been to this movie before, and there was not even any popcorn. did we
not waste enough bandwidth on clueless paranoia and empty sensationalism for
the arin formation?
in this industry, it's hard enough to focus and plan based on simple facts.
leave paranoia and sensationalism to the c^hkooks.

Normally I'd agree with you, Randy...but it is my considered
opinion that ICANN's apparent goals do not bode well for the
continued growth of the Internet. If anybody would like to
hear why I feel that way, contact me off-list, since arguing
about domain stuff has long been considered inapropriate for
this mailing list (right, Randy?)

You know, it pisses me off to no end that it's not currently
possible to disagree with how ICANN is trying to run things
without being lumped in with the kooks. If anybody has any
suggestions for a change in tactics, please let me know.
And again, if you'd like to see what I /do/ have reasons for
these views other than unreasoning paranoia, please contact
me off-list.
