Horrible world trade center crash, traffic effect

I know this is Sean's job, but -

FYI, 2 planes crashed into the world trade center.
Sounds like on purpose.

Not to be ghoulish, but the traffic impact is looking to be fairly large
on the 'net (and on the PSTN in the NYC area).

Just to add a few points:

All VHF TV stations except for CBS 2 are off the air, many radio stations
are off the air, and it's largely impossible to get a call in. All
bridges and tunnels are closed (which I assume includes the PATH).

A horrible thing to wake up to... could see the smoke out my bedroom
window...

Listening to America Radio (out of DC - only thing we could get), and a
man just called in saying that a plane just landed about 20 ft. from the
Pentagon. Be careful if you are in a federal building today.

A plane reportedly just flew into the pentagon in dc.
I heard it on a local radio station. still trying to get more info...

...and news now includes the white house and the pentagon being evacutated,
the pentagon due to an airplane crash - the white house due to a fire.

This shows a pretty impressive degree of coordination.

Beyond that, all US airports have been closed.

Gonna be a long day.

hi,

A plane reportedly just flew into the pentagon in dc.
I heard it on a local radio station. still trying to get more info...

been confirmed by CNN. A third plane.

The first was apparently a boeing 767, hijacked out of Boston. Bush has
already appeared on national tv to announce it as a terroist attack, NYC
is shut down, all airports are shut down.

good luck:(

m

I can see the smoke billowing up from the pentagon...

this is a sad sad day...

andy

The southern tower just collapsed.

Eddy

Just some additional information:

One of the towers has collapsed completely. Additionally, FBI
flash-traffic is indicating a threat of virus attack in conjunction.

To add just a smidgen to that...all aircraft in the air have been
ordered to land at the nearest airport.

few people (in pgh, PA) that i have been talking to on irc have
reported ./'d news sites everywhere. (cnn.com, yahoo.com, msnbc.com,
etc.) my office has been relegated am radio, which is pretty pathetic
for an ISP.

pretty poor performance for a network orginally designed to faciliate
communication in just such circumstances. i hope that military and
federal communication is faring better than the commercial sites.

i assume that in nyc or dc only. we are listening to AM radio just
fine...

We're sitting here and watched the tower fall. NYC is insane,
people (at this point, 30 blocks away) are starting to run in the
streets. The entire island is locked down, you apparently CANNOT get
off of Manhattan island.
The second tower just went down. We're getting reports via
phone from people about 10 blocks away.

The trade centers previously were a major nesting site for
TV/Radio antenna. The only reliable reports we are getting at this
piont is from direct observers, or (if you are lucky enough to get a
phone line) reports from NJ.

A chemical virus?

I live about 4 miles from the Pentagon, and heard a distant explosion Local TV is showing an apparently intact building, although there is smoke on the far side, in the direction of National Airport. There are conflicting reports if a helicopter or an airliner, or both, hit near the Pentagon, but the building itself does not seem to have taken massive damage.

Obviously, there are lots of sounds of emergency vehicles. I started hearing high-speed passes of what sounded like jet fighters starting about an hour ago. There was another sound at about 10:20, which shook my windows. It was about the magnitude of a very large fireworks burst down on the Mall. Can't say if it was a secondary explosion, a sonic boom, or what.

If anyone happens to know whether any of the buildings immediately surrounding
the WTC have been affected I would really appreciate knowing which ones; my
sister is in 140 Broadway. Thank you. Sorry for the non-operational content.

Non-operational but under the circumstances......

I am watching here on satellite Sky News and CNN.
Someone out there with a pretty sick mind. Whoever
is responsible for this has competely outed themselves.

Sick, extremly sick.

The problem seems to be site limiting, rather than network limiting. i.e.,
news sites are being overloaded, which is causing slow or no response to
http queries due to either server overload (my guess) or news site transit
link overload (also possible). This is what seems to be causing lacking of
response to news sites, instead of generalized network or peering
congestion.

It doesn't help that it looks like CNN decided to turn off the "akamization"
of their content. This had the immediate effect of helping them get the news
up on their site faster, but the lack of Flash Crowd protection really hurt
them in the long run.

It is definately a Flash Crowd day. :frowning:

Some good news... an eyewitness who was on the 81st floor of Tower 1(?)
got out (along with everyone on his floor) before the collapse.
Considering the towers were 110 stories high, that bodes well for
evacuation of the towers post-crash...

i think so. the CDC is preparing bioterrorism teams, according to the
(new refurbed) cnn.com site....
