I wouldn't try a NANOG range day in Oakland CA, but we definitely could have done something like that in Scottsdale or Atlanta. Does anyone know where NANOG 24 will be held?

Does Eric S Raymond ever go to NANOG?

What happened to the ties on the NANOG shirts?

I dunno... there's lots of decent ranges in the East Bay... I'm sure we could arrange something.

Tempting indeed; and looking closer there's evidently precedent for this at a range in Milpitas, just down the road from Oakland.

Oakland, although I won't be attending nanog) the Richmond Rod and Gun club
would be a better location to hold such an event. It's closer than Milpitas
and will have less traffic on the way.

Targetmaster's lanes are pretty lousy, and the layout of the range
also does not lend itself to groups particularly well. Very few people I
know voluntarily shoot at that range with any regularity.

There are plenty of other, better places around here.

The problem with Milpitas is that the road in question is 880 or
580 & 680 (which can be much faster, sadly), and the drive will be very
bad regardless of which day we intend to do this. There's also no easy
public transportation that far -- we may be able to get people closer to
a range via BART in the East Bay.

Now, it would be a fair drive to Fort Irwin, but are there any NANOG people at the National Training Center? If so, any chance to borrow some old backhoes and some artillery or tanks with live ammunition? Sounds like a plausible battalion mission: raid and destroy an engineer equipment depot.

the army does live fire at the Picatinny Arsenal near Dover, New
Jersey, and at the Aberdeen Proving ground in Maryland. i also think
that there may be some stuff going on at Yuma. certainly a NANOG will
occur close enough to one or another of these sites so that we can
have a NANOG live fire exercise.

cheers,

There's also a pretty decent place in Hayward that I used to go to, which
is closer than either of those. The name escapes me at the moment, but
they're in the phone book...

Which? The gun, or the backhoe?
