Contact for BART

Could someone from BART get ahold of me off list? Netops/security/ROW team.

-Ben

Matt Groening is unavailable. And why do you want to get in to a fight with him?

(unless you think BART and ROW have other well understood meanings
within the networking world?)

I’m speaking of the san francisco based Bay Area Rapid Transit department about Rights Of Way for fiber…

What are you talking about?

I have the song from ‘The Simpsons’ running through my head right now…

Now you’ve said enough that if the person you’re looking for is here he’ll have some idea you mean him.

What are you talking about?

Inappropriate abbreviation. I mean sure, why not a NANOG Friday Fight Club, but why would you want to get in a ROW (noisy argument) with BART Simpson?

HAH. Apologies for copying the list. But I think we all needed a good Friday laugh.

Making it relevant again, also looking for a good contact within CALDOT (California Dept of Transportation) and the joint bridge authority for the Bay Bridge in San Francisco.

Have a good weekend all

If the person he was looking for was on here, they would have understood it without the additional details. Indeed, ANYONE in the state of California probably got his meaning.

Certainly anyone in the SF Bay area understood.

Could be amusing, perhaps an event some people would buy tickets to as a source of revenue.

I agree that it’s worth considering the breadth of the audience you are posting to when deciding how much to abbreviate your message.

However, it’s not unusual for people to fail to do that.

You’ll have more luck finding California Dept. of Transportation if you call them “CalTrans” which is what they call themselves.

Owen

No

BART is Bay Area Rapid Transit, a public transportation system with its own bureaucracy and publicly elected board.

Caltrans is a separate State bureaucracy, though it has a big office in the city of Oakland near BART Headquarters.

And then there is Caltrain which is the commuter rail that runs down the peninsula. That organization has its own bureaucracy and board, too.

Lesson to be learned: don’t use obscure acronyms unknown outside a small geographical region

I mean, did anyone seriously ever confuse BART with Bart Simpson? Or
ROW with row? Come on now.

Huh?

I’m quite aware of this. If you’ll note, the thing I was replying to said he was ALSO looking for a good contact within CALDOT.

I was pointing out that CALDOT doesn’t call itself CALDOT, but refers to itself as CalTrans.

Sure, but I’m not sure how that suddenly became relevant to the conversation.

Well, I think calling any of the above terms “obscure” is a bit of a stretch. I would agree that they are not widely known outside of California and that the level of common knowledge may decrease with distance from the immediate SF Bay Area. However, referring to them as obscure when I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who has ever spent more than 2 weeks i the bay area that isn’t familiar with them seems a bit of an exaggeration.

I mean, it’s the first hit in this thing we have at work called Google. http://bfy.tw/JYgG

My bad - I didn’t read this thread thoroughly.

But my email client is at fault too… it hid all the quoted text under a button “Show quoted text” because you top-posted, so I didn’t see any context. I’m filing a bug report.

Here, here… first thought BART private aviation software package (http://seagilbart.com), then thought BART Simpson (and then about Matt Groening, however you pronounce his name) , then though a Google search was the best answer.

Either way that FWIW that was a long drive, to get the left coast.
